Becoming Me

Becoming Me

I’ve spent almost 40 years learning who I am.  I’m still learning and practicing more every day.  The one thing that I’m always focused on is growth.  I want to be the best version of me possible.  I’m not looking for perfect – and neither should you.

Perfection.  Perfection is not a viable answer in my world.  Perfect means you can’t become any better.  You have nothing to strive for.  There is nothing to challenge you.  Why would perfection ever be your goal?  It most certainly will never be mine.  Why?  Well, perfection is boring.  The bumps and bruises you get along your journey is what will make it interesting.  It may not be ideal, but it sure as hell makes you stop and think.  Think of your life as a maze.  The maze is already laid out and you have to figure out how to make it to the end turn by turn.  If you make the wrong turn, then you turn around and reroute.  One or two detours along the way (or even 4, 5, 6 or 7) will just mold you into the person become.  Your detours make you chose the type of person you want to be.  You find what works for you or you pick up a lesson from someone you met along the way.

I’ve learned through my relationships with others in school, through my various jobs, my experiences as a child and with my own children.  I’ve made life choices based on friendships, my experiences as a student, as an athlete and as a teacher.  I’ve been taught life lessons by some very wonderful coaches and even some of my own students along the way.  I’ve been left to fend on my own and I have had hands to hold… and boy did I need them to hold on tight in some ways.  In each and every way, I picked up bits and pieces every day of who I want to be and what Iegacy I want to leave behind.

So I challenge you to take a step back and look at yourself.  Take a real close, hard core look.  What do you want out of your life?  How do you want to be portrayed?  How will you leave this world?  Will you make your mark in a positive way?  Will you be happy with the way that it all turned out?  If you look at yourself now and you don’t feel that way, then you are at a dead end in that maze, my friend.  It’s time to reroute…. but don’t ever wave that white flag and give up.  There are millions of possibilities you just have to find the way that works for you.  I’ve rerouted this year.  Writing to you is just a stop along the way but there are big things ahead and I can’t wait to share them with you all.
